Innovative research, hands-on learning and a range of fun activities can be found at SRUC’s stand at the Royal Highland Show, following an extraordinary year of achievements for the institution.
After gaining taught degree awarding powers and opening Scotland’s first new school of veterinary medicine in nearly 150 years, SRUC will officially open its new School of Natural and Social Sciences at Ingliston.
And from animal CPR to Lego building and butter churning, there will be a chance for visitors of all ages to enjoy fun firsthand experience of SRUC’s education and research, while customers can catch up with the experts at SAC Consulting.
Visitors will be met with a flurry of games and plant displays upon arrival at the stand, including SRUC’s own version of the popular fairground game ‘hook a duck’, with prizes on offer for those able to ‘catch a cow’, while also learning about SRUC’s Cool Cows project to breed more methane-efficient animals.
Inside the marquee, a wealth of engaging activities will inform and entertain the public about the latest developments at SRUC and the educational offerings available to prospective students. Aspiring vets can take part in animal CPR training on stuffed toy dogs or have a go at bandaging a foal.
A highlight at this year’s show will be the launch of SRUC’s new School of Natural and Social Sciences; this multidisciplinary school will seek to enhance productivity, food security, environmental management, mitigation and adaptation within the local and international economy. Prospective students can learn more about the new School by visiting the Student Recruitment section of the stand.
Younger guests can take part in building a bird box or insect hotel out of Lego, while parents and members of the farming community can learn more about the services offered by the Farm Advisory Service (FAS) or try out food samples from the Digital Dairy Chain and SAC Consulting’s Food and Drink Enterprise partners.
On Saturday 21 June, SRUC will host its first ever Alumni Farmers Market, showcasing the produce of past SRUC students and offering a taste of diverse achievements and ventures. Products for sale will include Brose Oatdrink, as well as items from the Skye Seaweed Company, Craigies Farm and more.
Professor Wayne Powell, Principal and Chief Executive at SRUC, said: “The Royal Highland Show is one of the most important dates in the rural calendar and it will again serve as a fantastic showcase to demonstrate SRUC’s exceptional growth over the past couple of years. With educational and fascinating displays for all ages, the SRUC stand is an unmissable stop for visitors to Ingliston. We look forward to welcoming everyone to join us for a unique insight into SRUC’s education, research and consultancy offerings.”
