SRUC shines in 2025 Times Higher World University Rankings

SRUC has solidified its position as a top-third institution globally in the 2025 Times Higher World University Rankings (WUR), with improvements in the overall UK and subject rankings.

This recognition highlights SRUC’s enduring strengths in international research collaboration and research excellence, placing the institution within the top quartile globally for research quality and international outlook.

Professor Eileen Wall, Head of Research at SRUC, said: “Our success in the global rankings reflects the strength of our partnerships, both local and international. Nearly 75 per cent of our research outputs are produced with international co-authors, enabling us to deliver high-quality research that not only ranks among the best but also drives meaningful change.

“While these rankings focus on academic metrics, our mission at SRUC is to ensure that our research excellence translates into actionable solutions that influence policy and practice, making a difference in the world around us.”

SRUC’s progress in achieving Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP), which it officially gained on 14 October (LINK), has been a key element of its ongoing strategic growth, strengthening its position in international higher education. TDAP will not only elevate SRUC’s academic offering but also align the institution with globally recognised standards, further boosting its reputation.

Professor Wayne Powell, Principal and Chief Executive of SRUC, said: "Securing TDAP is a significant step in SRUC’s trajectory towards international recognition. This, combined with our research strengths, positions us to lead not only in academic excellence but also in delivering solutions to the critical challenges of our time. Our ability to translate research into practice is what sets SRUC apart in today’s global educational landscape."

As the world’s most comprehensive evaluation of university performance, the WUR incorporates 18 carefully calibrated indicators. These indicators assess institutions across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook. The 2025 rankings feature 2,092 universities, including 185 new entries compared to the previous year, showcasing a growing global landscape of higher education.

The rankings are trusted worldwide by students, teachers, academics, governments, and industry experts. Their 2025 rankings are based on data such as 157 million citations, 18 million research publications, and survey responses from more than 93,000 scholars globally, providing a truly comprehensive evaluation of higher education institutions.
