SRUC has begun a new chapter in its history after officially welcoming its very first cohort of students to its suite of International Postgraduate Degrees.

Welcoming 65 international students from countries including Nepal, India, Pakistan and Nigeria, the students have begun their academic journey at SRUC’s Aberdeen and Edinburgh campuses.

The students were greeted with a warm welcome and a chance to experience Scottish culture through visits to landmarks such as Stirling Castle and Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh.

Among the new arrivals is Muhammad Gohar Abdullah, 24, from Pakistan, who has enrolled in the MSc Project Management programme.

He said: “I chose to study at SRUC for several reasons. First, I was interested in the project management course they were offering. The university is in such a vibrant and diverse city like Edinburgh, and it was also more affordable compared to other universities.

“I saw the sea for the first time and that was the best experience for me. The people here are polite, and the city is a historical heaven. Scotland is a lot colder than back home, and it’s greener and cleaner, so it’s been a pleasant experience.”

Also joining from Pakistan is Muhammad Najeeb Ali, 25, who has enrolled in the MSc International Food and Agriculture Business programme.

He said: “Scotland has a strong reputation for agricultural research and innovation, and SRUC offers excellent resources and expertise in this field. What I’ve most enjoyed about Scotland so far is the natural beauty, friendly people, and the rich culture. I appreciate the diversity and the welcoming community here.”

The milestone comes as SRUC builds on its commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment. Last year, it gained taught degree-awarding powers for the first time and is actively expanding its international outreach particularly targeting students from Nepal, India, Nigeria and Pakistan.

SRUC, which specialises in a range of specialisms around the natural economy, is positioning itself as a leading destination for international students seeking postgraduate programmes in sustainability-focused business disciplines, including International Food and Agriculture Business, Business Consultancy, and Project Management.

Professor Wayne Powell, Principal and Chief Executive of SRUC, said: “We are delighted to welcome these international students to Scotland and to SRUC and I’m sure they’ll enjoy their time here. While sustainability remains a key focus, students are drawn to our strong business-oriented curriculum, underpinned by our own consultancy operations. We are building on our commitment to creating a diverse, inclusive learning environment, offering students from around the world the opportunity to thrive academically and culturally in Scotland.”
