Interpretation of Johne's disease PCR on faeces
Negative - Genetic material specific to the Johne's disease organism was not detected in the sample.
Inconclusive - These animals should be considered not to have any definitive result (positive or negative) and therefore will normally need to be re-sampled to confirm their test status. Samples must be submitted in containers and gloves changed between samples to minimise the risk of contamination.
Positive - Genetic material specific to the Johne's disease organism was detected in the sample. These animals are shedding the Johne's disease organism in their faeces and this is considered diagnostic for Johne's disease infection.
The PCR method for the detection of the Johne's disease organism was changed in October 2019. It uses 10g of faeces giving improved detection sensitivity.
