Johne's disease - ZN smear

Interpretation of Johne's Disease Microscopy
The presence of acid/alcohol-fast bacilli forming typical clumps is strongly suggestive of Johne's disease. Where single acid/alcohol-fast bacilli are observed this is considered suspicious of Johne's disease, but not diagnostic.

The sensitivity of this test for clinical Johne's disease is 30%, and the specificity is high where typical clumps of acid/alcohol-fast bacilli are seen. Where negative or suspicious results are obtained it is recommended to screen the animal for antibody to Johne's disease and/or by faecal PCR.
