Brenda Nicol

Following a brief career in sales and marketing, I was fortunate enough to be able to follow my dream of becoming a veterinary nurse when I obtained employment in a local veterinary hospital as a trainee veterinary nurse. I studied on a block release basis at North Highland College in Thurso and in 2006, I was entered onto the RCVS professional register as a registered veterinary nurse. During my career in practice, I predominantly worked with small animals nursing a vast range of different conditions but have for a spell, worked solely with horses again seeing a vast range of cases.

In 2009, I obtained my A1 assessor certificate where I helped to train the student nurses in practice, and this is where my love of teaching began. In 2018, I joined SRUC as a Lecturer where I teach on the veterinary care assistant, animal care, equine and rural animal health courses and really enjoy passing on my knowledge to the students and teaching a variety of different topics.

I still carry out regular work within veterinary practice when I can to keep my knowledge and skills up to date within what is an ever-changing industry.

I achieved my TQFE teaching certificate in 2021 through Stirling University and currently looking at options to further my knowledge.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, our cat Khloe and our Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Rebel who can sometimes live up to her name! I enjoy riding which mainly consists of hacking these days. I enjoy travel, going to the gym, and taking part in Parkrun events and I am also an avid football fan.
