Hi I'm
John Farquhar

I am a consultant in the Food and Footprint group. I have broad expertise and interest in carbon mitigation, sustainability, LCA (life cycle assessment) and energy. My work focuses on modelling and optimising carbon mitigation options for commercial clients (M&S, Sainsburys), validation and compliance for carbon and wider sustainability claims (MRV), engineering solutions for sustainability projects (GreenShed), and energy recovery.

I started my career in the 1990’s after my degree, working in forestry and forest resources in tropical forest conservation projects. In 2000 I had my first full woodfuel job working on biomass research for the Forestry Commission, this started my transitions to renewables and carbon work. 2006 saw me move to a biomass technical advisory role in the north east of England, covering advice and training in fuel supply chains and installations.

In 2012 I moved to SAC Consulting as a Senior Consultant, initially working on technical design and support for a wide range of renewable energy and efficiency projects. While I still have engineering and design work within some of my projects, the core of my work is around wider carbon mitigation modelling and optimisation in food supply chains, working alongside my amazing colleagues in Food and Footprint, and commonly also with relevant experts within our SRUC research division.
