NC Horticulture with Landscape Construction

This Unit is intended to introduce candidates to the major groups of plants, the structure and function of the major parts of flowering plants and their requirements for growth.

This Unit describes processes that influence soil formation, describe the characteristics of a range of natural soils and examines a range of growing media and ameliorants used in the horticulture industry.

This Unit explores broad groupings of plants, identifies a range of plants using the binomial system and introduces the use of plant keys.

This Unit develops the skills necessary to select, carry out pre-user checks, operate and carry out basic repairs to a wide range of horticultural machinery.

This Unit enables candidates to acquire the skills required for applying fertilisers, explore the role of plant nutrients and their effects on plants.

This Unit will be able to identify a range of common weeds, pests, diseases and non-pathogenic disorders and of appropriate techniques to control common infestations.

This Unit develops the knowledge and skills to appreciate a range of garden design principles, understand how hard and soft landscape designs and plantings impact on and relate to the surrounding environment, and to prepare a basic design plan.

This Unit describes a range of methods for propagating plants vegetatively and will be able to undertake propagation procedures, maintain equipment and propagules and produce new plants from the propagated material.

This Unit describes the factors which influence the establishment of lawned areas and the maintenance techniques required to establish and maintain a lawned area.

This Unit enables candidate to gain the skills needed to maintain a home garden or an allotment from cultural requirements to cropping plans to cultivating an onsite allotment.

This Unit allows candidates to develop an understanding of different types of displays, the plants suitable for use in those displays and to develop the skills to plan, create and maintain a plant display.

This Unit enables candidates to select, use, establish and maintain ground cover plants, bulbs, annuals, seasonal bedding, wall shrubs and climbers and mixed border plantings in landscape features.

This unit is designed to recognise the valuable learning and development which takes place as a result of planning and carrying out a suitable work placement conducted internally on the campus grounds. You will have an opportunity to think about your abilities and career aspirations in preparation for your work placement.

During the placement, you will carry out work specific duties, work with others and make progress towards achieving a learning goal. You will review their progress and learning gained on completion of the placement building confidence for entering industry.

This unit is designed to introduce you to a broad range of topics which are key to the concept of business formation. You will learn about different types of business models, finance and sources of help required to be successful in starting a business.

On completion of the unit, you will have investigated the viability of a business idea and produced an action plan indicating how a business idea can be taken forward.
