NC Horticulture with Garden Design

This Unit is intended to introduce candidates to the major groups of plants, the structure and function of the major parts of flowering plants and their requirements for growth.

This Unit describes processes that influence soil formation, describe the characteristics of a range of natural soils and examines a range of growing media and ameliorants used in the horticulture industry.

This Unit explores broad groupings of plants, identifies a range of plants using the binomial system and introduces the use of plant keys.

This Unit develops the skills necessary to select, carry out pre-user checks, operate and carry out basic repairs to a wide range of horticultural machinery.

This Unit enables candidates to acquire the skills required for applying fertilisers, explore the role of plant nutrients and their effects on plants.

This Unit will be able to identify a range of common weeds, pests, diseases and non-pathogenic disorders and of appropriate techniques to control common infestations.

Building garden fences is a key operation for most landscapers. This highly practical unit will cover the main different styles and construction techniques of ornamental and functional garden fences. It requires you to build fences on campus to the desired specification.

Most landscapers will need bricklaying skills at some point in their career. This highly practical unit requires you to build walls to varying specifications. It also teaches you to be aware of legislation, Health & Safety considerations, and to learn of the key terminology of brick materials. You will build walls under the guidance of industry experienced lecturers in the safety of industry leading facilities.

Every landscaper will need to learn how to interpret design plans. This unit teaches you how to interpret a given plan and to set out the design to the correct scale in preparation of landscape construction operations. It also equips you with the practical know-how of the logical order of operations when constructing a garden.

This unit introduces students to laying paving. You will learn about setting the right foundations, different techniques and materials whilst undertaking live projects on campus.

This unit introduces you to the vast range of materials a landscaper will encounter. Being able to recognise and name these materials is fundamental for those entering industry. The unit also teaches the technical information providing you with the knowledge that you can order the correct materials for different jobs.

This unit is designed to recognise the valuable learning and development which takes place as a result of planning and carrying out a suitable work placement conducted internally on the campus grounds. You will have an opportunity to think about your abilities and career aspirations in preparation for your work placement.

During the placement, you will carry out work specific duties, work with others and make progress towards achieving a learning goal. You will review their progress and learning gained on completion of the placement building confidence for entering industry.

This unit is designed to introduce you to a broad range of topics which are key to the concept of business formation. You will learn about different types of business models, finance and sources of help required to be successful in starting a business.

On completion of the unit, you will have investigated the viability of a business idea and produced an action plan indicating how a business idea can be taken forward.
