The Job:
Preston Hall Estate, located just outside Pathhead, Midlothian, within easy reach of Edinburgh by car, is excited to welcome a seasonal gardener to the Walled Garden and surrounding estate and properties for Summer 2025. This is an opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic gardener with a recognised formal horticultural qualification, and experience in a similar setting to join the estate at an exciting time as we look to develop and improve the existing gardens.

The Company:
Preston Hall Estate is located just outside Pathhead, Midlothian, within easy reach of Edinburgh by car. The walled gardens form part of an 18th and 19th century designed landscape and are of outstanding architectural interest. Currently, the gardens consist of extensive herbaceous borders, mature trees and shrubs, and a glasshouse containing grapevines, figs, and stone fruits. At present we are open for events such as weddings, by appointment for tours, and on designated open days throughout the year.
The Role:
- Strimming
- Weeding and border maintenance
- Hedge trimming
- Leaf collecting
- Planting
- Pruning
- Propagation
- Cutting back
- Watering
- Facilitate events and workshops as required
- Other tasks as required
The Candidate:
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic gardener with a recognised formal horticultural qualification, and experience in a similar setting.
- Experience with use of hand tools such as spades, forks, mattocks, rakes, hoes etc essential
- Experience with use of garden machinery such as strimmers, pedestrian mowers, leaf blowers, hedge cutters is essential
- Experience in operation of small tractor/trailer and/or RTV is desirable
- A full clean driving license valid for driving within the UK is essential due to the location of the estate and the nature of the role
- Ability to adhere to good Health and Safety procedures, and the ability to work effectively within these parameters
- The ability and confidence to interact with visitors during garden events
- A resourceful nature and ability to work under your own initiative
- Demonstrable experience of gardening in a professional setting is essential, a qualification is desirable
- Due to the nature of the role you will need to be comfortable with physical work, and potentially walking over long distances to different areas of the estate
- Attention to detail and the ability to leave a tidy finish
- Willingness to work in all weathers.
The Package:
- The job is for 4 days a week.
- 6 month contract.
