The Job:

The Scottish Smallholder Festival is the annual showcase for small farming and rural life in Scotland. It is held every year and this year will be at the Royal Highland Centre on the 18th October.
The Festival organising team want to offer agricultural and animal welfare students the chance to come along and provide their services as stewards on the day. You will also have time to visit the show.
We are looking for responsible people who are able to lend their hand to anything within this busy event. A positive attitude is essential. Knowledge of livestock would be advantageous. Public facing ability is essential.

The Company:

The Scottish Smallholder Festival is a not for profit event run by a charity Smallholding Scotland, which was established to represent and promote small farming across Scotland. It is staffed in the main by volunteers.

The Scottish Smallholder Festival is the annual showcase for small farming and rural life in Scotland. It is held every year and this year will be at the Royal Highland Centre on the 18th October.

It is not just for smallholders, it is also for farmers, crofters, people interested in rural life, foodies, craftspeople, growers, land reformers, regen and sustainability advocates, new entrants and agritourism businesses.

For 2025, the Scottish Smallholder Festival will once again mix together high level livestock competition in sheep, pigs and goats; 13 breeds of horse and pony in the equine parade, a full programme of seminars and demonstrations across 6 venues within the Highland Hall, as well as a full trade and craft area and great food from small food outlets alongside stalls offering home made products from farms and crofts in the ‘smallholder market’.

The Candidate:

We are looking for responsible people who are able to lend their hand to anything within this busy event. A positive attitude is essential. Knowledge of livestock would be advantageous. Public facing ability is essential.

We are looking for 6-8 people.

Responsibilities:

You will be expected to be at the showground at 0645, and you will be provided with a Hi-Vis gilet which you must wear at all times whilst you are working. You will also be required to read and sign the safety notice for the event.

You will then join the team fulfilling a number of different roles:

  • livestock unloading
  • assisting stands to get set up
  • controlling the car park
  • supporting the control centre.

Your first shift will end at 11am. From 11am until 3pm, you can spend time at the show, talking to keepers, visiting the seminars or stands. The second shift starts at 3pm and ends at 5pm.

The Package:

In total you will be working for 6¼ hours for which you will receive £78.75 paid direct into your bank account. You will not receive any other expenses or benefits.
