Meningitis
Meningitis is always of concern and should be taken seriously. It is inflammation of the lining of the brain caused by different types of organisms which are either viruses or bacteria.
One in ten people at any time are carrying the bacteria which cause these diseases. We pass them between each other by regular close contact, such as kissing. Mostly these bacteria don't make us ill, but in a very few people they get into the blood stream and cause meningitis or meningitis blood poisoning. Nobody knows who is at risk, so make sure you know the symptoms.
It is strongly recommended that you get vaccinated before coming to college or university. Further information on vaccinations, symptoms and treatments can be found in our leaflet or by visiting the NHS website or the Meningitis Research Foundation website.

Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)
The MMR is an effective combined vaccine that protects against Measles, Mumps and Rubella (German Measles).
These highly infectious conditions can easily spread between unvaccinated people. Getting vaccinated is important as these conditions can lead to complications including meningitis, hearing loss and problems during pregnancy. Two doses of the MMR vaccine provide the best protection against MMR and it is important to check you have had two doses before you start college or university. Free period products
In 2018, the Scottish Government committed to providing access to free sanitary products for students in schools, colleges, and universities. Scotland has subsequently become the first UK nation to offer free sanitary products for all, as part of the 2020 Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Bill.
SRUC continues to deliver on the Scottish Government requirement to provide access to free sanitary products in our premises, to support equality, dignity, and rights for those who menstruate, and to ensure that lack of access to products does not impact on an individual's ability to fully participate in education at all levels.
Products are promoted and made available to students in a variety of ways which can depend on where students are located within SRUC. As well as being available in toilets and residencies across our estate, products (single use, reusable and bulk orders) can be collected or ordered:
- Using the mySRUC app
- through student welfare services
- as part of SRUC’s welcome week
- at the SRUCSA (student association) office
- via a QR code on posters
- at wider local or council pick up points.
