Hi I'm
Ruth Vichos

-
Expertise:

I am Section Lead for Horticultural Innovation at SRUC, where I combine teaching, research and industry engagement to support the development of a more sustainable and resilient horticulture sector. My work focuses on connecting science, technology and practical growing expertise to address some of the biggest challenges facing food and plant production today.
My areas of expertise include sustainable crop production, protected horticulture, horticultural innovation, food security and skills development. I am particularly interested in how emerging technologies, including automation, robotics and controlled environment agriculture, can help the sector respond to climate change, labour shortages and increasing demands for sustainable food production.
A significant part of my role involves educating and inspiring the next generation of horticultural professionals. I am passionate about developing learning opportunities that equip students with both the practical skills and innovative mindset needed for successful careers in the land-based industries. I also work closely with industry partners to ensure education and training reflect the evolving needs of employers and the wider sector.
Originally from Shetland, I have always had a strong connection to food production, plants and the natural environment. Throughout my career, I have worked across education, plant science and international food security projects, giving me a broad perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing horticulture at local, national and global levels.
I am committed to raising the profile of horticulture as a rewarding and impactful profession and regularly contribute to discussions on sustainability, innovation, careers and skills. Through my work at SRUC and public engagement activities, including television and media appearances, I aim to encourage more people to recognise the vital role horticulture plays in supporting healthy communities, resilient food systems and a sustainable future.
Areas of expertise: horticultural innovation, sustainable crop production, protected horticulture, food security, horticultural education, skills development, automation and robotics in horticulture, climate-resilient growing systems, and careers in the land-based sector.
